Social Enterprise Intern

Job Summary:
Interns are needed to assist ECDC Enterprise Development Group (EDG) staff in improving the organization. In particular, Interns play critical roles increasing this non-profit’s sustainability by improving its revenue-generating products, providing analytical support on reporting, and making other vital contributions to team-based work. Interns are matched to a specific product within the organization based upon their skills and interests. Examples include: microfinance loans, loan portfolio management, computer lab, development (raising money), and evaluation. Intern provides support to staff as well as takes on primary responsibility for a specific project.
About EDG:
EDG is non-profit organization in Northern Virginia serving the greater Washington DC area with financial services. EDG’s approach to microenterprise development and asset building enables customers to overcome issues that bar them from conventional interaction with banks.
Formed in 1992, EDG is the only entity providing microloans, technical assistance, training, and asset-building opportunities throughout metropolitan Washington, D.C for low to moderate income people, in particular new immigrants from Africa to the US. It is a certified Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) and a Small Business Administration (SBA) Microloan Intermediary. As of 2005, EDG has trained more than 3,500 people in business related services and provided $7 million in micro-loans to date. The savings program opened more than 720 Individual Development Accounts or IDA with clients savings $850,000 of their own money that was leveraged nearly three times more in additional financing dollars.
Reporting and Relationships:
Interns report to senior staff based upon product and may be responsible for supporting other members of the organization.
Availability:
Internship scheduling is to be negotiated to fit the selected applicant’s schedule. The position can be full-or part-time. The internship will be finalized by written agreement for a period of at least 10 weeks. Part-time positions will be project based and/or require a minimum of 15 hours a week commitment.
Essential Job Functions will vary. Examples include:
Enhance one social enterprise product within the organization
Update the business plan pertaining to this product
Conduct background market research to improve product delivery and decision-making
Support staff in day-to-day programmatic work associated with the product
Specific support tasks, as requested
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Spirit of entrepreneurship and problem-solving are vital
Analytical aptitude and financial knowledge are highly valued
Interest in US economic development and social enterprise is highly desired
Previous business, real estate, or computer lab experience is helpful, but not mandatory
Excellent organizational and human relations skills in a cross-cultural environment
Ability to prioritize, meet deadlines, and work gracefully under pressure
Education and Experience:
Preference given to applicants who have completed or are pursuing a Master’s degree (or equivalent).

Compensation:
Modest Internship stipend is provided to full time candidates.
